Outings - 2015

Outings are a very important portion of the Scouting experience. Most of the word “Scouting” is “outing” and here is where the scouts learn and practice their outdoor skills. Camping, cooking, fire building, compass work, canoeing, hiking, biking, nature study, staying dry when the weather turns bad and most important of all, our troop's first and only law “Safety First” and finally working within the patrol method. We try to have an outing every month.

You can get your equipment lists here: This is the Regular Equipment List and this is the Winter Equipment List (Boys Scouts of America considers 50 degrees cold weather camping)

Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders: here are your Duty Rosters and Menu Planning Sheets!!

Please note:

Dues dates are posted for a reason. Proper planning requires that you signup for an outing by the date due. Have consideration for the people making all the plans by allowing them enough time to work the plan.

Please do not ask to be added to the outing if the due date has past as your request will be denied. If you need this outing for advancement, it is your responsibility to turn your information and money in promptly.

Activity Name Activity Date Waiver, Permission Slips & Money Due
YMCA Rock Climbing Day December 12th, 2015 December 3rd, 2015
Troop 23 will be spending the day in our own backyard! We will be hanging around at the Lattof YMCA for an evening of Rock Climbing. The wall opened in 1991 and has been a great hit since then. It is five walls in one, each panel ranging in degree of difficulty so there is something for everybody! Scouts will also have the opportunity to do the ropes course as well.

Blackwell Youth Campground November 13th -15th Thursday, October 29th
Visitors hiking through Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville walk on land that the retreating Wisconsin Glacier shaped 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. In fact, the glacier’s meltwaters left behind much of the soil that covers DuPage County today. After the glacier’s retreat, savannas with widely spaced oak trees formed on the higher ground while the lower-lying ground became home to marsh and prairie plants.

Mirror Lake/Devils Lake October 16-18th, 2015 Thursday, October 1st
Mirror Lake - This Park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so calm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals and a cabin for people with disabilities. This is where we will camp and hike.

Maquoketa Caves September 11-13th, 2015 Thursday, August 27th
Troop 23’s first outing will be to Maquoketa Caves in Iowa. We will camp from Friday to Sunday. Maquoketa Caves is probably Iowa's most unique state park. Its caves, limestone formations and rugged bluffs provide visitors a chance to "step back" into geological time thousands of years. Caves vary from the 1,100' Dancehall Cave with walkways and lighting system to Dugout Cave. The remaining caves are all different sizes and shapes. Some can be explored by walking while others can best be seen by crawling. In any case, a flashlight and old clothes and shoes are most helpful.

Winter Camping Outing February 20 - 22, 2015 Thursday, February 5th
We will brave the elements at Camp Lakota and test our ability to survive in the Northern Illinois tundra. Snow or no snow, we will have activities planned to keep active and warm. Along with our tents, a heated shelter will be nearby in case anyone needs help warming up and also to use for some activities. Part of the agenda will include necessary training for the Second Class rank such as knife sharpening and preparing wood for firebuilding. The winter offers a better time to hike some of the trails that can be swampy and mosquito ridden in the summer. If the temps fall below 32 degrees, we can earn the Frostfire award! This is a regular outing, so meals will be by patrol cooking. Dinner Saturday night will be family style: we will all eat one big meal together.
